“I took a shower in Aunt Gracie’s bathroom.” Daisy, her hair still wet, plopped down next to her sleeping mother on the sofa bed where they’d slept the night before. “It was so fun. The water comes at you from everywhere.”

“Is that right?” Reluctant to leave the cozy cocoon she’d made in the lofty down comforter, Natalie rose slowly and leaned upon her elbows. Sunlight poured through the windows and spread over the dining area to cast a pale glow across the polished top of the wooden table.

“Uh-huh.” Daisy jumped off the bed and raced into the kitchen, where Grace was making breakfast.

“I’ll put a shower like that on the list for our someday house.” Natalie yawned and grabbed her phone from under her pillow to check the time. Almost 9:00 a.m. Late for her. She checked to see if Chris had texted her overnight, but there were no messages.

“You’re welcome to try it out if you can hurry.” Grace stood in the kitchen’s arched doorway. “We’re having french toast, and I’m just about ready to start.”

“You two go ahead and eat.” Natalie threw her legs over the side of the bed, then stood. “I can be quick.”

Ten minutes later, she was back in the kitchen, dressed in shorts and a plaid cotton shirt, her wet hair wrapped in a towel. “That shower is mind-blowing. Big enough for half the neighborhood.”

“Well, I’m not sure of the legal capacity, but it accommodates Linc and I quite nicely.”

“I bet.” The ingredients for french toast were on the counter, so Natalie turned on the frying pan that was still on the stove top and tossed in some butter. “Where did Daisy go?”

“Back out to check on the tadpoles. She called them her ‘baby frogs’ and wanted to make sure they’re still there.” Grace took a carton of half-and-half from the refrigerator and placed it on the counter. “Coffee’s made. And I’m happy to make your breakfast.”

“I don’t mind doing it. I just need to heat up the frying pan a bit more.” She poured herself a cup of coffee while the butter melted.

“Did you sleep well?” Grace settled onto one of the stools at the island.

“I slept like the dead,” Natalie told her. “It’s so quiet here. So different from our neighborhood, where you can hear cars going up and down the street at night, radios blaring. The occasional police siren.”

“What? You live in such a nice area.”

“It is a nice area, but if there’s any place in the Philadelphia metro area where there’s the kind of quiet you have here, I’ve yet to find it.”

“Wyndham Beach has a very low crime rate. I can’t remember the last time I heard a police siren. Oh, sure, every once in a while a couple of guys go down to Dusty’s and tie one on and get a little rambunctious. Brett sends out a patrol car to settle them down or takes them home to sleep it off. And we get car accidents, mostly on the highway, people in a hurry to get to the Cape.
